Background & Experience
Doug has specialized in the sale of income producing investment properties, and particularly multifamily, since 1998. However, commercial real estate is Doug’s second career. In his “first life,” as he calls it, Doug was a nationally recognized trial attorney, a career that included service as a Captain in the Army’s Judge Advocate General’s Corps, teaching as an Adjunct Professor of Law and twenty-five years of trial practice. Doug earned the highest possible rating for legal ability and ethics (an AV rating) from the Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory, the most respected source of authoritative information about lawyers in the country. Until he retired from the practice of law, Doug was nationally certified as a Civil Trial Advocate by the National Board of Trial Advocacy, one of only about a dozen attorneys so certified in Washington at the time. For over a decade, Doug served as a Special Disciplinary Counsel for the Washington State Bar Association and, for three years, he was a member of the Association’s Disciplinary Board. He often was selected by litigants as an arbitrator, was a member of the Panel of Arbitrators of the American Arbitration Association and served on a number of occasions as a Judge Pro Tempore in both District and Superior Court. Doug continues to be an actively licensed attorney in Washington, but no longer engages in the practice of law. His legal training and experience are of great benefit in Doug’s commercial real estate brokerage, as many of his transactions are complex in nature.
Seeking new challenges, Doug began his second career as a commercial real estate broker in 1998. Before joining NAI Puget Sound Properties as a Vice President in 2010, Doug was associated with Coldwell Banker Commercial for two years, Marcus & Millichap for two years and for nearly eight years was an Associate Vice President with Colliers International. Doug holds a Managing Broker’s license and is a Certified Commercial Investment Member (CCIM) of the CCIM Institute. He is a past member of the Board of Directors of the Western Washington Chapter of CCIMs. Doug is frequently requested to speak to professional organizations regarding commercial real estate investments.
Doug has been selected for inclusion in Who’s Who in American Business, Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders of America, Who’s Who in American Law and numerous similar publications. He has served the community as President of the Board of Directors of the Tacoma Little Theatre and as a member of the Tacoma Advisory Council of Big Brothers and Big Sisters. For eight years, Doug was a Big Brother, mentoring a young man from age eleven through adulthood. Doug and his “Little Brother” (now a mature adult) continue to be in contact with one another.
Doug lives in Port Orchard with his wife of over forty years, who is a stockbroker.
